The Celts
The Celtic tradition of masquerading as malevolent spirits originally took place at the year’s end. The Celts believed that as humanity transitioned from one year to the next, the boundaries between the living and the departed blurred. By donning demonic costumes, the Celts sought to ward off these spirits, hoping to blend in and avoid detection.
The Catholics
When the Catholic Church integrated elements from other religious celebrations in an effort to woo back Christians and those who had strayed, the devilish dress-up festivity transformed into “All Hallows Eve,” followed by “All Soul’s Day” and “All Saints Day.” During these observances, people dressed up as angels and saints.
Trick or Treating
The tradition of going door-to-door for treats or playing tricks has its roots in the Middle Ages. Back then, children engaged in “guising,” a term derived from “disguising,” where they would seek alms or provisions in exchange for prayers or songs dedicated to the departed. This practice was also known as “souling,” with participating children referred to as “soulers.”
Trick or treating didn’t make its debut in the United States until the late 1920s or early 1930s, pausing briefly during World War II due to sugar rationing.
The phrase “Trick or Treat” dates back to 1927 when Canadians coined it as a lively demand for goodies.
Decorated with wagons, gates, and barrels, homes and streets became the setting for this spirited affair. Young mischief-makers would insist on edible spoils at both front and back doors while declaring, “Trick or Treat.”
Jack O’ Lanterns and Pumpkins
The Irish were the pioneers of Jack O’ Lanterns. They placed candles inside hollowed-out turnips to ward off ghosts and spirits on this eerie occasion.
Interestingly, not everyone is fond of Halloween. In fact, a survey from 2006 revealed that over half of people in America and the UK prefer lights out to trick or treaters.
This year stay safe, go out or stay in but don’t forget to take advantage of the Dean Von Music Merchandise Sale ending tonight at midnight.
