The Early Days of NAMM
NAMM, which stands for the National Association of Music Merchants has always had a mission as well. That mission is to, “Strengthen the music products industry and promote the pleasures and benefits of making music.”
It all began back in 1901 when 53 members of the National Piano Manufacturers Association of America formed the National Association of Piano Dealers of America, or the NAPDA.
Things moved quickly and by 1902 the first annual NAPDA trade and convention show was held in Baltimore MD at the YMCA hall. Membership dues per store were $5.00.
Always an innovator the NAPDA starting producing books on musical education during this time and started stepping things up for its members.
NAPDA to NAMM
Over the years the convention has always had great entertainment for members and attendees. At the NAPDA show in 1915 guests were treated to a skit performed by none other than Charlie Chaplin. The skit was about proper piano techniques.
In 1919 NAPDA became the National Association of Music Merchants, or NAMM, and has been that way ever since.
In 1926 NAMM became partners with the Bureau for the Advancement of Music and created materials. This allowed dealers at NAMM to display the materials in their stores.
Fast forward to 1941 and NAMM membership skyrockets to 554 and by 1967 that number had climbed to 1000.
Over the years NAMM has continued to grow attracting people from all over the world. To date the National Association of Music Merchants has over 10,300 members.
