Remembering Veterans Day with Dean Von Music

The celebration of Veterans Day commemorates the cessation of hostilities in World War I between Germany and the Allied Nations in 1918. It also serves as a tribute to all American veterans. Initially known as “Armistice Day,” this federal holiday was officially established in 1938.

Armistice to Veterans Day

After the conclusion of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day underwent a transformation. That transformation was Veterans Day. A day dedicated to honoring all who had participated in various wars.

President Woodrow Wilson initially proposed observing the day. Observing it with public gatherings, parades, and a moment of silence at 11:00 am on November 11. In 1921, an unidentified U.S. soldier killed in World War I was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

Veterans Day to Honor Those Who Served

The shift from Armistice Day to Veterans Day occurred with the mobilization of the Air Force, Marines, Navy, and the U.S. Army during World War II. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law on June 1, 1954, officially designating November 11 as Veterans Day. It was established to honor American veterans from all wars.

This day of remembrance is not exclusive to the United States; other nations such as Australia, France, Britain, and Canada also honor veterans of World War I and II around the same date. Britain celebrates Remembrance Day on the second Sunday of November, while Canada observes it on or near November 11. Commonwealth countries and Europe mark two minutes of silence every November 11 at 11:00 am.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

In the U.S., a wreath-laying ceremony occurs at the Tomb of the Unknowns on November 11, accompanied by ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, parades, and celebrations across every state.

Despite the recent discord and tension in the United States, it is essential to take a moment to unite and reflect on the true purpose of this holiday — to honor those who have bravely fought for the nation.

Take a moment to remember what this day is really for and spend your day honoring our Veterans who have saved our country time and time again.
